Asafoetida / Hing

Asafoetida is the other name for the spice hing. It is derived from the plant Ferula assa-foetida. Its fragrance is too strong and good for heart. Hing is one of the spice, which is used most widely in India. It should be added little as per the quantity of food. If it is used in excess, the taste of the dish may turn bitter. The smell of the hing fades away when it is sauteed. Asafoetida is used in Ayurvedic medicine. It is also good for digestive system.

The asafoetida plant is 2 meter in height, with hollow and succulent stems of about 5-8 centimeter in diameter. It is commonly known as the food of Gods and devil’s dung. Dry hing has a dark amber color. As it is resin, it is quiet hard. It has to be ground with a hammer, rock or mortar.
Asafoetida has a delicate, unique taste. To regulate the metabolism and digestive system, asafoetida is also used in every digestive churna or tablets. It is used in preparing a dish with good fragrance.
