The leafy portion of the beet is edible. It is generally served steamed or boiled. It has a texture same as spinach. It is a rich source of potent antioxidants and nutrients. Beetroot can be peeled, steamed and then can be eaten with butter as a delicacy. It can also be eaten cold as a condiment. It can be peeled, shredded raw and can be eaten as a salad.
Pickled beets are considered to be the traditional food of the South Americans.

Uses of Beetroot / Chakundar

  • Beetroot is used in various dry sabzi preparations, raitas and many more cuisines.
  • They are used in toast sandwiches and stuffed dosas.
  • Now a days, they are added in the bhel, which gives an awesome flavor. It is optional too.
  • The deep red roots of the beet are also consumed. They are first boiled and then, after the addition of oil and vinegar, they are eaten cold in salad.
  • These are also combined with the vegetables and then a pickle is prepared, which helps in adding a choice in the main course.
  • Boiled and pureed beetroots are used as a dip, chutneys and juices.
  • Beetroot can also be used to make wine.
