Fennel seeds / Saunf

Fennel seeds are also known as “Saunf”. These seeds are aromatic and flavorful herb. They belong to the family of “Apiaceae”. It consists of yellow flowers and feathery leaves. They are pale greenish in colour. It has a sweet and refreshing flavor. It grows about 2.5 meters up in height with hollow stems. The leaves grow up to 40 centimeter long. The fruit is a dry seed from 4-10 millimeter long, half as wide or less and grooved.


Fennel seeds should be stored in air tight container. Try to keep away from moisture and pests. Fennel is used as a flavor in some natural tooth pastes. The seeds are used in cookery and sweet desserts. In many parts of India and Pakistan, the roasted fennel seeds are consumed as “mukhwas”, an after meal digestive and breath freshener. It is an essential ingredient of the Bengali spice mixture “panch phoron”, or in Chinese “Five spice powders”.
