How to Make Gujiya – Recipe, Ingredients

Gujiya (Gujia) is a north Indian sweet. It is made all over the country, specially during the festivals. It is really good to make this snack for diwali. We have used khoya for the stuffing and maida (refined flour) for the outer covering. It has a very unique shape and is lovely to eat. It is something different and not too hard to prepare. It can be served with the soft drink. This sweet is specially made in the state of Rajasthan.

Ingredients for making Gujiya

  • 1 cup Khoya (Mawa)
  • 3 tablespoon Poppy seeds (Khas-Khas)
  • 1 1/2 cup Maida (Refined flour )
  • 5 teaspoon melted Ghee or Oil
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 4 tablespoon crushed mixed nuts
  • 4 tablespoon dessicated or grated dry Coconut
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cardamom Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Baking Powder

Method for making Gujiya

  • Firstly, roast khoya in a nonstick pan for nearly 2 minutes, till it becomes brown in color.
  • Keep aside and let it cool.
  • Take a pan and dry roast the poppy seeds and keep aside.
  • Now take maida in a bowl and add ghee or oil. Mix well.
  • Add required water and make a medium soft dough.
  • Let the dough rest for 20-25 minutes.
  • Add sugar, mixed nuts, poppy seeds, dry coconut and cardamom powder to the khoya and mix well. Stuffing is ready.
  • Now make small balls from the dough and roll small puris from it.
  • Apply little water on the edges of the poori.
  • Now take 1 1/2 teaspoon stuffing and put in the centre of the puri and fold like half moon.
  • Press the edges nicely with your fingers to seal the edges.
  • For a better look, press once again the edges with a fork.
  • Heat oil or ghee in a pan. Fry these gujiya on a medium flame till golden brown in colour.
  • Drain on an absorbent paper and keep aside.
  • Store gujiya only when it is completely cooled down.
