Methi Dal Dhokli Recipe – Ingredients, Method of Cooking and Tips

Methi Dal Dhokli is one of the famous Gujarati dish, the dhokli itself says that it is a Gujarati dish. This recipe requires minimum oil which is good for health. Dal dhokli is usually prepared in every house but this gives a new version to dal dhokli as a special ingredient is added. This special ingredient, that is methi, totally changes the taste of dal dhokli. It gives an awesome taste, which makes us feel to have it in every week.

Ingredients for making Methi Dal Dhokli

This recipe requires 2 steps. Firstly we have to make dal and then dhokli. So it is made one by one in this manner.

Ingredients for making Dal

  • 1/2 cup toovar ( arhar ) dal
  • 1 teaspoon Ghee
  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds ( rai/ sarson )
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin seeds ( Jeera )
  • 1/4 teaspoon Fenugreek seeds ( Methi )
  • 5-6 curry leaves ( Kadipatta )
  • 2 Cloves ( laung )
  • 2 sticks Cinnamon ( dalchini )
  • 1 bay leaf ( tej patta )
  • 2 small round Red chillies ( boriya mirchi )
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafoetida ( hing )
  • 4 pieces soaked Cocum
  • 1/2 cup chopped Tomatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder ( haldi )
  • 1/2 Lemon juice
  • 4 Green chillies
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon grated Ginger
  • Salt as per taste

Ingredients for making Dhokli

  • 1 cup Wheat flour ( Gehun ha aata )
  • 3/4 cup chopped Fenugreek ( Methi )
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder ( haldi )
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chilli powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafoetida ( hing )
  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • Salt as per taste

For the garnish

  • 1/4 cup chopped Coriander

Method for making Dal

  • Wash and soak the dal for 3-4 hours. Drain the water and pressure cook it by adding 4 cups of water.
  • When the dal is cooked, keep aside to cool. After sometime blend it to a smooth paste.
  • Heat ghee and oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and curry leaves.
  • Add cloves, cinnamon, bay leaf, small round chillies and asafoetida. Saute for few seconds.
  • Now add nearly 3 cups of water, cocum, tomatoes, turmeric powder and lemon juice.
  • Add green chillies, chilli powder ginger and saute for 7-8 minutes.
  • Now it’s time to add the dal and salt and simmer for nearly 10 minutes.

Method for making Dhokli

  • Mix all the ingredients of dhokli and make a firm dough.
  • Now make thin chapatis from this dough.
  • Roast on both the sides and let it cool.
  • Now cut the chapati in any shape of your choice. It can be diamond or square, any shape and keep aside.
  • Now, before serving, firstly boil the dal, add the pieces of dhokli. Let the pieces boil for sometime (5 minutes).
  • Add sugar if needed.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.


Dal should not be too thick. If it is thickened add water and boil for some more time.
