Pongal Recipe – Ingredients, Method of Cooking

Pongal is one of the sweet rice prepared during the festival ‘Pongal’. Pongal is a South Indian festival. This dish is very delicious and easy to make. We have used moong dal and rice which stand as a main ingredient. Black pepper gives a fine texture to the pongal.

Ingredients for making Pongal

  • 1/4 cup Moong Dal (Green gram/Mung dal )
  • 1 cup Rice
  • 2-3 cup Water
  • a pinch of Turmeric Powder (Haldi)
  • 1/2 cup Dessicated Coconut
  • 1/2 teaspoon Peppercorns (Black pepper)
  • 1-2 teaspoon Ghee
  • 3/4 teaspoon Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • a few broken Cashewnuts (Kaju)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper Powder
  • Salt as per taste

Method for making Pongal

  • Fry the moong dal till you get a little flavor.(Don’t fry too much)
  • Now, mix both the rice and dal in the pressure cooker and add water.
  • Add turmeric powder, coconut, few peppercorns and little ghee.
  • When it is well cooked, heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds, peppercorns and cashewnuts.
  • Add the cooked rice and dal. Add salt, black pepper powder and mix well.
  • Pongal is ready to serve.

How to serve?

  • Serve hot with Coconut Chutney or Raita of your choice. It can be tomato or Onion or any other.

Tips

  • This recipe becomes more and more tastier, if a lot of ghee is used.
