Salt is also known as rock salt or table salt. It is a crystalline mineral. It is composed primarily of sodium chloride (NaCl), a chemical compound which belongs to the ionic salts. Salt helps in preserving food. Sea water has lots of salt. The kidneys are the main source of sodium levels in the body. If the sodium level goes high, it may cause high blood pressure and if it drops too low, then the hormone aldosterone is released. This increases the amount of sodium held in the body, by reducing the amount lost in urine. Excessive loss of sodium is very rare. Low sodium levels in the body can be dangerous if not treated.

Unrefined salt contains small amounts of magnesium and calcium halides and sulfates. The calcium or magnesium salts make unrefined salt hygroscopic.
Refined salt is the salt which is widely used. It is composed of sodium chloride. Salt can be obtained by evaporation of sea water.
Iodized salt is used to help in reduction of the incidence of iodine deficiency in humans. It is the leading preventable cause of mental retardation. Iodized table salt helps in reducing the disorders of iodine deficiency in countries where it is used.
