Tamarind chutney / Imli Chutney

Tamarind chutney is spicy and tangy. It is made by blending the tamarind or imli and mix with the spices. It is also used as a dip or topping over chaats.

Ingredients for making Tamarind chutney

  • 1/4 cup Tamarind
  • 2 cup Dates
  • 1 cup Jaggery (if needed)
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Roasted Cumin powder (Jeera powder)
  • 1 teaspoon Garam masala
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • Salt as per taste

Method for making Tamarind chutney

  • Soak tamarind and dates in some water for 2-3 hours.
  • Now, blend, strain and Keep aside.
  • Take a pan. Heat oil and add mustard seeds and the tamarind juice.
  • Add jaggery if needed.
  • Add the roasted cumin powder, red chilli powder and saute well.
  • Let it come to boil. Add salt and the garam masala.
  • Saute for 3-4 minutes and the tamarind chutney is ready to serve.


Add some black salt to the chutney, the chutney will become more delicious.
