Tomatoes are also called as “Tamatar”. Tomato is a fruit and is referred to the plant “Lycopersicon esculentum”. As the tomatoes are formed from a single ovary, we can consider tomato not only as a fruit but also as a berry. The word “Tomato” may refer to the plant Solanum lycopersicum. They are widely known for their outstanding antioxidant content,including the rich concentration of lycopene. There are nearly thousands of different varieties of tomatoes which vary in size, shape and color.

Tomatoes have fleshy internal segments filled with slippery seeds, surrounded by a watery matrix. There are small cherry tomatoes, Italian pear-shaped tomatoes, yellow tomatoes and the green tomatoes. Tomatoes can be red, orange, pink, purple, yellow, green, brown or black in colour. Although tomatoes are available the whole year, they are found best in season from July through September. Wonderful qualities of tomatoes are found at this time.

Tomatoes are enjoyed all over the world. The largest tomato producing country is China. It approximately has 34 million tons of production. Although, tomatoes are often closely associated with Italian cuisine, they are actually native to the western side of South America. The first type of tomato grown is thought to have more resembled the smaller-sized cherry tomato than the larger varieties.

They have an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin K and vitamin A. Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant. They are low in fat, calories, sodium and also free from cholesterol. Tomatoes are very helpful in the development of healthy skin, teeth, bones and hair. The tomatoes are not only good in lowering the blood pressure and cholesterol levels but also helps in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
