Tuvar dal / Pigeon pea / Toor dal

Tuvar dal also known as pigeon peas or Toor dal. They are yellow in color. They are also available either oily or plain. It stands as a main ingredient for sambar, which is the South Indian recipe. It is regularly eaten with rice and vegetables in Southern India.

Pigeon peas have a world production of about 4.3 million tons. About 82% of this is grown in India. They are widely cultivated in all the tropical and semitropical regions. Toovar dal are drought resistant. So, it can be grown in areas with less than 650 mm annual rainfall.

  • It is used with lemon and vinaigrette to make salads.
  • The famous Gujarati khichdi is prepared using tur dal, which is healthy.
