Besan / Gram flour

Gram flour is also known as besan, chickpea flour, bengal gram flour or garbanzo flour. Besan is made from ground chana dal. It can also be made from either raw or roasted chickpeas. And it is quiet sure that the roasted chickpeas gives an awesome flavor than the raw one, as the raw chickpeas gives slightly a bitter taste. It is used as a coating (batter) on many deep fried items. Specially the vegetable fritters called pakoras are very famous in India. Besan is used in many cuisines and also in many countries. It is considered as a staple ingredient of Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi cuisines. The oil content in the flour can make it turn rancid more easily than other flours.

Besan can be stored in refrigerator for nearly 6 months. It should be kept in an air tight container. The better option to keep gram flour fresh is either purchase a little quantity as per the requirement or grind the chickpeas at home.

Health benefits of besan

  • Gram flour contains high proportion of carbohydrates. When it is mixed either with water or yogurt, the obtained paste is used as a facial exfoliant.
  • It is very popular and helpful for the glowing skin.
  • It can also be applied on the whole body, by adding little turmeric (haldi) and water/rose water. This will soften the skin and give a shine to the body.
  • Nutritionally, besan is far superior compare to standard white flour.
  • Besan is lower in carbohydrates and calories than wheat flour.
  • A mixture of curd and besan applied on face, is good for the oily skin.
