Garlic may be also known as “Allium sativum”. Garlic is specially used for its pungent flavor. It is used for its culinary and medicinal purposes. It is used as a seasoning or condiment. It is a fundamental component in many dishes. The flavor may vary in intensity and aroma with different cooking methods. The skin of the garlic is much like the onion and is removed before using in raw or cooked form. China is the largest producer of garlic. Approximately, 10.5 million tonnes of garlic is produced by China (77% of the world’s output).


Garlic is very easy to grow. It can be grown year-round in mild climates. It grows well in loose, dry, well drained soils and in sunny locations. Garlic plant grows up to 2 ft (0.6 m) in height. Bulb (Clove) is the part which is generally consumed. The leaves and the flowers which are called as bulbils are also sometimes eaten.

  • Garlic cloves are also used in flavoring the oils.

The peeled cloves of the garlic can be easily stored in vinegar in the refrigerator.
